About Me

Hi, I'm Caleb Mercier, an aspiring software engineer with a background in financial services and a passion for solving complex problems with clean, efficient code.

After earning my Bachelor's in Personal Financial Planning and working across several roles in the financial industry—from paraplanning to client service and coaching—I discovered a deep interest in the logic, creativity, and structure of software development. That interest has since grown into a full-fledged career pursuit, and I’m currently completing a Master of Software Development at the University of Utah (graduating December 2025, GPA 4.0).

My experience uniquely bridges two domains: the analytical rigor of finance and the technical depth of software engineering. In my financial roles, I developed a sharp attention to detail, collaborated with diverse teams, and supported hundreds of advisors and clients nationwide—all skills I now bring to software development.

My goal is to apply these skills in a full-time software engineering role where I can contribute to building robust, scalable systems and continue growing as a developer. I'm especially interested in backend development, but I bring a full-stack mindset and a strong willingness to learn.

Monte Carlo Retirement Simulator

Python project that simulates retirement portfolio outcomes using Monte Carlo methods. It models the growth and depletion of individual or joint investment portfolios under stochastic market conditions, accounting for income, expenses, annual savings, inflation, and investment returns. The simulator generates probabilistic projections to help users plan and evaluate retirement readiness.

BFS vs Dijkstra Pathfinding Visualizer

An interactive web-based visualizer that demonstrates and compares two popular pathfinding algorithms: Breadth-First Search (BFS) and Dijkstra’s Algorithm. It allows users to create mazes by placing walls, adjust start and end points, and then watch the algorithms explore the grid in real-time. The main goal is to provide an educational and visual tool to understand how different algorithms search for the shortest path in a grid environment.

Platformer

A precision 2D platformer developed in C++ visual scripting using Unreal Engine for a 72-hour game jam. Game ranked by popoular vote #231 for fun out of almost 1,200 entries. The game challenges players with tight controls, creative level design, and unique movement mechanics inspired by classic arcade titles.
